The Liverpool String Orchestra originally formed in 1992 as the LSO under the direction of David Wiggins, who had previously run it since 1975 as an evening class of Mabel Fletcher College and the City of Liverpool Community College. It is now under the direction of Neill Jackson. The Orchestra meet with the express wish to provide an opportunity for local and semi local string players keen to improve their playing ability, to join together and perform in a secure and supportive society and enjoy a good evening's interesting repertoire.
It is in the informal atmosphere of a rehearsal orchestra such as the LSO, that these practices take place; thus taking away from the player the pressure of the concert platform, and allowing attempts to be made at playing music which at times may be considered as perhaps a little too difficult for the member to perform 'in concert'.
The members, who are an extremely 'friendly bunch', very much welcome new members of any musical ability, young or old to join us at our rehearsals. We understand that you may have, at times, 'other commitments' and this we respect, we only ask that you are keen to join us as many times as you possibly can during our rehearsal terms.
Rehearsals take place weekly on Monday evenings, at the Unitarian Church Hall, Ullet Road, Sefton Park, Liverpool - - see MAP playing from 7.15pm until 9.15pm with a break for the 'nicest cup of tea' available in the North West.
The repertoire is extremely varied. A full list of recently rehearsed music titles can be found on the HOME page under the heading Special Features, please click on "Recent Repertoire"
All are very welcome and given an enthusiastic greeting by all members of the ensemble [on average approximately 20 members are present each week] with much encouragement
